They refuse to let the athenians talk to the ppl. The athenians believed this was to keep them from persuading the ppl. The melians believed they would deceive the ppl. They had a debate back and forth; there were no speeches. They recognized that this debate wasn"t really a fair debate b/c either way they would end up captured. They justify that when one is stronger than the other the best thing to do is to just give in that fairness has nothing to do with it. That it is just how nature works. They know that the fortune of war does not always equal the size of the army.
