Document Summary
Greeks and romans lived in a world where there was visual art, temples, buildings. More present as a visual thing than an oral thing- myths. Panhellenic sanctuaries: all greeks throughout greek world will travel here to worship; ex. ) Panhellenic games: greeks come together to participate in athletics ex. ) Nemean games at nemea- zeus: the sanctuary of apollo. Treasuries: each city state with sufficient wealth would build their treasures to dedicate to gods ex. ) gold, statues, etc; political wise: the larger the treasury, the more powerful/ influence/ wealth the city seems to have. Panhellenic sanctuaries were places where greeks could size each other up. Much smaller complex than one would think. Composed of religious buildings, athletic facilities and treasuries. Sanctuaries eventually fell into ruin after roman empire/ emperor constantine converted to christianity (upkeep by few worshippers was too much) Weren"t destroyed; just fell into disuse and neglect. Sculptor of statue: phidias/ pheidias- also made statue of athena in parthenon.
