Part 2 - guest professor: dr. edith omwami. The kenya national adult literacy survey (knals) was conducted between june and august 2006 by the kenya. National bureau of statistics (knbs) in collaboration with the department of adult education, unesco nairobi. The purpose was to generate accurate data on the status of literacy in the country. The objectives of knals: determine the magnitude, levels and distribution of adult literacy for persons aged 15 years and above, obtain comprehensive data and information on adult literacy education institutions and providers. Identify issues of concern, which need to be addressed in the promotion of adult literacy. Knals used four literacy assessment instruments that were developed in consultation with these stakeholders to ensure they were culturally relevant. Stakeholders were: university of nairobi, ministry of education, kenya national examinations. Council, faith-based organizations, civil-society groups and community-based groups. There are 42 different ethnic groups in kenya and 18 major language groups.
