Document Summary

L e c t u r e 1 5. Barrier to prevent o2 from dissolving in oceans. Deep water horizon oil spill: occurred on an oil rig. Gas and oil rigs in the gulf of mexico = 3858 - 1 (that ex- ploded) = 3857 when oil spills it spreads over the surface to form a thin lm (oil slick) Light oil spreads faster than heavy wax oil. Non-water soluble components emulsify (form viscous mass of tar balls and chocolate mousse . In mangroves- lenticels clogged with oil- death. Bacteria and evaporation helps (also ocean currents) Booms: used to hold oil in one place so that it is easier to clean. E. g. large vacuums, skimmers, foam to soak up oil. Bioremediation: process that uses microorganisms, fungi and green plant enzymes to break down harmful oil spill chemicals. E. g. o2 (rapid process), ph, nutrient availability, competition (do added microbes survive?) Oil + micro + nitrogen + phosphorus = 75% biodegradation.
