L e c t u r e 7. Beyond hybridity: india and the south asian diaspora. Communities are to be distinguished not by their falsity/ genuineness, but by the style in which they are imagined. (musical) performance must be understood not as a manifesta- tion of the free play of a hybrid identity but rather as a creative re- sponse to the demand for coherence and stability within spe- ci c racial and cultural contexts. The invocation of tradition may itself be distinct, though covert, response to the destabilizing ux of the post-contemporary world. Identity has to do with the stories we tell about ourselves through various forms of art. Our concern is not whether these identities are true or not, it is the way/style in how they were shaped.
