King norodom sihanouk (the evening i met you) Release 1975, but probably written among his other romantic songs in 50s, 60 (communist khmer rouge took over in 1975) 50s and 60s considered a golden age for cambodian music. King norodom sihanouk- spoke french, knew a lot about french, wrote many orchestra pieces, not much for traditional cambodian instruments. He built his legacy by always being surrounded by the art. Pentatonic melody (most common in cam traditional music) five note scale. Many ornamentations typical of khmer classical and folk technique influenced by europe (france), afro-cuban. Radio, media, etc. very important for spreading popular music. Period of neutrality created a flourishing culture under sihanouk. Ros sereysothea- would sing in rice fields, eventually mother let her become a professional singer. Went with a traditional music group, offered a job in national recording. Batthambang to sos math, but was divorced bc of domestic abuse.
