ETHNOMUS 60 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ritornello, Brandenburg Concertos, Figured Bass
Document Summary
Dance suites: pieces with movements inspired by dance rhythms. Many dances started out as peasant dances: suites were styled french or english . Often written for solo instruments, not always for dances. Within them one could find movements from other places. Individual dance rhythms could be used for movements within non-dance suite pieces. One rhythm was common in vocal music: dances drawn from all over europe. Represent dances but more for listening than dance. Dance rhythm common to vocal music is the siciliano. Composer does not always play all the instruments, fingerings are hard to play. Concerto grosso: group of soloists at the front, main orchestra in the back. Music trades back and forth between the main group and the soloists. Giovanni gabrieli circa 1600: antiphonal music (call and response) Wrote music for brass instruments on different balconies in church in antiphonal style. Continuo (early on, would have been theorbo, gradually taken over by the harpsichord)
