FILM TV M50 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Diegesis, Magnetization
Document Summary
If there is no sound, it loses fullness and depth. Often experience cinema as if the sound was naturally within the image. Differences between image and sound: directional. Unlike the image which is unidirectional: dimensional. However much the illusion of depth, that is a flat image, the image is 2dimensional. We can stop a film and there will be an image. Sound can"t be stopped, the sound is gone, sound relies on duration. Fleeting, you can"t capture it, it"s in motion, you can"t fix or freeze. Functions of sound it: can actively shape how we perceive and interpret the image, can clarify image events, contradict them, or render them ambiguous, directs out attention to on screen or off screen space.
