GE CLST 73A Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: David Ferrier, Robert Hooke, Paul Broca
Document Summary
Used a method that distinguished one neurological disorder from another. Studied sclerose en plaque, comparing it with other diseases with tremors. Feather test- parkinson"s patients would shake holding the feather. Ms patients feather would shake with willful movements. Led to experimenting with stimulating parts of the brain to see what/where it affects it. Fritsch and hitzig, stimulated cortical regions in the brains of dog and identified the motor cortex. David ferrier, studied lesions on monkeys ( which are closer to humans as opposed to dogs that fritsch and hitzig used) Ferrier, transferred functional maps of monkeys to that of a humans. Ferrier brought a few monkeys to prove his points. Glotz dog had less brain damage than he had explained. Ferriers monkeys had the lesions exactly where he had described them. Franz joseph gall of germany (1758-1828) phrenology. Paul broca of france (1824-1880) localization of language. Jean- martin charcot of france (1825-1893) localization of neurological disease.
