The sensory systems first job is to take in the environmental inputs and turning it into information that the brain can use, or they create action potentials. Sensation- the organism shows some change in the nervous system based on the physical energies sensing something. Where you are consciously aware of an input. Sensory receptor organs, receptor neurons, we can only detect those energies or substances we have receptors for. Several species can detect electrical or magnetic fields or infrared radiation- forms of energy we do not have receptors for. We are diurnal species, we do stuff during the day. We can only detect stimuli within s certain range. Sensory info goes to parts of the thalamus. Polymodal, doesn"t just respond to one sense.
