Dates: 400-30 kya. (means 400-30 thousand years ago) Geographic range: evolved in europe and west asia (european development simultaneous with development of modern humans in africa). Physical characteristics: cranial capacity 1125 - 1550 cc (larger than humans), rounded cranium with occipital bone (a rounded bulge at the back of the skull), massive brow ridges, robust post-cranial skeleton, compact, heavily muscled bodies, and cold-adapted. Behavior: specialized hunters, large social groups (multiple hearths), short dangerous lives burials, cannibalism, care for the sick(possibly?) Mousterian industry: levallois prepared core technique (more planning, greater cognitive capacity (possibly ?) more effective use of the raw materials, risk-reducing strategy), hafted tools, greater raw material selectivity. Altogether more work in the production but tools longer use life and more reliable; regional differences appear, more specialized tools. Dates: 200 kya to present (fossils date to 130 kya to present). Geographic range: worldwide (first found in africa).
