GE CLST M71CW Lecture 6: Community Archaeology and Indigenous Archaeology
Document Summary
Fields of archaeology that deal with the issue of trust and respect: community archaeology. Involving communities in planning and carrying out of research projects that are of direct interest to them. There is no definitive meaning of community. In the united states community archaeology can broadly be separated into three distinct types: projects that collaborate with american indians, projects that collaborate with other local and descendant communities, and outreach specifically for public education. Expression of archaeological theory and archaeological practice that intersect with indigenous values, knowledge, practices, discipline ethics and sensibilities through collaborative or community directed project. Frequently archaeologists who were not members of the indigenous group being studied had led the excavation and care of remains and artifacts. They often ignored or did not consult the descendants or successors of the people being studied. The kennewick man and dakota pipeline case relate a lot with these fields. Researchers and communities can benefit from it.
