Document Summary

Successful cities are always seats of change. Turning right on red lights on a stop! Europe saw vienna as the cultural capital of europe (during wwi) What do cities do culturally? (in order to have cultural invention, you need all these things) Meet people who do things differently; e. g. there is not one of worshipping god, or painting, or what have you. Exposes people to a range of conceptions and ideas of how world works. Loosen ties that bind people to taken for granted social bonds and norms. Norms, like arranged marriages in countryside, start to break down when people move to the city. People were able to question norms when they lived in the city. Provide institutional settings and base for innovative projects - universities, government agencies, churches, wealthy people, etc. Organizations provide a framework or an alternative to age old loyalties (like churches and extended families), and thus spawn new identities (student, government worker, etc. )
