Document Summary

Designed to handle runoff from 10-year frequency storm. 10 year storm = 1/10 chance of storm in any given year. Probability does not change if you get storm one year, it can happen again next year (10% chance) Slopes on terraces must be designed to accommodate farming equipment. Low enough slope (flatter is better) for farming equipment to move through it. Big enough slope so machine doesn"t degrade the terrace. Terrace channel gradients should be sufficient to drain off water and prevent overtopping ridges. Maximum water-carrying length must be established to prevent water buildup during intense storms. Spacing: interval between terraces must keep land farmable and control erosion. Layout: choose appropriate sites for terraces; must evaluate hydrology soil surveys, should be all figured out and mapped out before building terraces or farming. Parallel terraces: usually spaced as a multiple of width of farming equipment. So farming equipment can move through the terrace.
