Riparian rights: riparian zone (area adjacent to water bodies- usually streams)- if you own land next to this water body, you own the water. Sometimes areas have a lot of drought- just because you have water rights, water is not always guaranteed when it"s not there during droughts. Prior appropriation: first come, first serve- first person to come to a place and apply to use water in the area has priority over the water. Anyone who applies today will never get water because families to applied for water rights during settlement era have dibs. Dams back up with sediment rivers are starved of sediment downstream erodes riverbed downstream.
