GEOG M109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Piezometer, Parent Material, Aquifer
Document Summary
Slash and burn agricultural releases nutrients into soil, however, the nutritional level is sustained only by the canopy above. If this is removed, the soil below will erode. Adequate time and shade is needed for soil to recuperate and become fertile. This is significant because the total amount of natural resources are limited, and when resources are burned (trees, oil), the carbon that is released becomes trapped within this closed system. It"s influenced by relief (relates to mountain"s lift), flora, fauna, humans, parent material, and climate. Humans influence vegetation, climate, relief, flora, fauna, and plant material. Secondary: produced as a result of human activities. Example: irrigation irrigated areas, either as a result of rising groundwater tables (from excessive irrigation) or the use of poor quality water. Dryland non-irrigated landscapes, generally as a result of clearing vegetation and changes in land use. Seawater intrusion coastal aquifer systems where sea water replaces groundwater that has been over-exploited.
