Document Summary

A lot of the knowledge of language is unconscious knowledge. Same w eng teachers; set of rules that govern language. Prescriptive grammar eng teachers (prescribed rules), descriptive grammar linguists (do english speakers talk like this?) For eg: don"t end a sentence w a preposition. Bad sentence: i don"t have anything to put the apples in. Good sentence: i don"t have anything in which to put the apples. As a speaker of english you accept the bad sentence. Bad: emily wants to quickly stop by the store. Good: emily wants to stop quickly by the store. We changed: don"t use preposition at sentence end and whom because its describing preposition. Descriptive grammar- how people actually speak, what sentences they accept. Lost mary cat her prescriptively and descriptively wrong. Therefore descriptive grammar also has rules, but more based on usage of language. Prescriptive idealized view of language varieties, prestige rules, powerful people use that.
