LIFESCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Damselfly, Allopatric Speciation, Speciation
Document Summary
Species are groups of actually or potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. ernst mayr. Members of the same species often look alike. But not always true, members of the same species can look very different. Members of different species can look very similar. Members of a species are characterized by ecological niche -> one species per niche. Members of the same species share a common ancestry. Different species are reproductively isolated from each other. Zygote: diploid cell resulting from fusion of 2 gametes (fertilization) Mating dances & calls (male makes the calls) Can mate & form a zygote, but offspring are less/not viable or are sterile -> not genetically compatible. Speciation occurs when the 2 populations are unable to produce viable, fertile offspring. Sister species are the most closely related to each other because they share the most recent common ancestor. Speciation with no gene flow between diverging populations.
