LIFESCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Flatworm, Calcium Carbonate, Gastrulation
Document Summary
Man o war-colony of individuals with different morphologies. Coral bleaching-algae leaves coral and leaves it white with no nutrients. Carpet anemone & clown fish- anemone protect fish, fish could leave food for anemone accidentally. Mnemiopsis leidyi -invasive species in the black sea, predator of fish eggs-> major ecosystem impacts. Triploblasts-embryos have 3 tissue layers: ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm ( middle skin ) Evolution of the mesoderm was important-> gave rise to complex muscle tissue used in movement. Ectoderm produces the covering of the animal (give rise to skin and nervous systems) Mesoderm gives rise to the tissues in between (circulatory system, muscle, and internal structures such as bone and most organs) Pseudocoelomate: body cavity does not completely surround the internal organs. Coelomates: body cavity that completely surrounds the internal organs. Solid masses of mesoderm split and form coelom. Defined by: feeding structures (lophophores) and larval characteristics (trochophore) Gas exchange by diffusion-high surface area to volume ratio.
