Any substance that passes through the plasma membrane is available at any time in any amount. However, substances that travel through the protein are not always available because they are gated. The cell determines when the gated proteins open and how they allow the substances pass. Channels are proteins embedded in the membrane. Diffusion is the driving force and the channels are the method of movement. The amino acid sequence of the protein spans the membrane more than one time. Ion channels: gated channels open and close depending on the cell and surrounding environment. Every ion channel is highly specific and can only work with certain ions: driving force is simple diffusion, mechanisms. Regulated by voltage change i. e. change in overall charge in the cell. The charge is negative in the cell and the gate is closed. The channel then opens when the charges are flipped.
