MIMG 185A Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Progenitor Cell, Lymph Node, Thymus
Document Summary
Monocytes are not apcs (not activated --> doesn"t present antigens) T cell receptors recognizes the mhc and peptide complex. Ab binds to ag --> cell recognizes the complex --> cell eats it. T cell receptor has to recognize the mhc and peptide; can"t recognize soluble antigens. Apc chops up antigen and presents it on the surface on an mhc complex --> Helper cell recognize apc mhc complexes --> proliferates and makes cytokines. -> cytokines help b cells differentiate and make antibodies and help cd8 t cells become cytotoxic. Hiv affects apcs and cd4 t cells which are major players in immune response. Intestine is the largest lymphoid organ: many immune cells needed to combat infection. Stem cells decide whether differentiate to myeloid lineage or lymphoid progenitors. Erythropoietin is made in the kidney, secreted out then goes into the bone marrow where it is used to make blood cells. Progenitor cells develop t cell markers as they migrate through the thymus.
