Document Summary
Short-term memory - longer duration of memory. Information is retained in ns for years. Divisible into recent (hc) and remote (other regions) Dividing memory into phases is helpful for nding neural correlates of memory. Consolidation - process involved in conversion of stm to ltm. Blocking protein synthesis immediately after training - animal"s memory is intact a few hours later, but ltm will be blocked. Ltm formation is critically dependent on arousal, motivation, emotional state. Different types of learning are dependent on different memory systems. Patient hm - bilateral temporal lesions - severe anterograde amnesia for declarative memory. Could still learn things that required procedural memory. Memories move - time-dependent effects of hc lesions on memory. Cellular consolidation: stm => ltm, form requiring protein synthesis. Fear response - measure freezing to get index of how well they remembered shock. Removal of hc after 1-10 days signi cantly impairs memory and response.
