Document Summary

Thrasymachus" definition of justice is that justice is the advantage of the stronger. Meaning that justice is: what interests the stronger, what benefits those who are powerful. Thrasymachus points out that obeying laws is two things. It is a just action and it is in the interest of those who are powerful. Justice as a tool of the powerful people causes people to obey laws and rules. Justice is the hidden cause of a person"s behavior according to thrasymachus. Thrasymachus also points out that performing unjust actions reaps more awards than just actions. The function of an object is what it can do and what can be done with it. What is the virtue of the human soul: socrates assumes that a virtue of the human soul is justice. If cutting is the function of knives and a virtue of knives is sharpness. Therefore, a knife can only complete its function well if it has that virtue.
