PHILOS 31 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Green Cheese, Metalanguage, Atomic Sentence
Document Summary
Set of sentences, one of which is a conclusion. Therefore, so, it follows that, my conclusion is, hence, etc. Since, because, in view of, this is implied by, given, etc. An argument is valid if it is impossible for all premises to be true and the conclusion. If all premises are all true, then the conclusion must be true false. An argument is sound if it is valid and all of its premises are true. If herbie eats pizza then he gets thirst. Possible for both premises to be true but the conclusion still be false. If herbie eats pizza, then he will get sick. If herbie does not eat pizza, then he will be hungry. If herbie will not get sick, then he will not be hungry. Implication: a set of sentences implies a given sentence if and only if the truth of the given sentence is guaranteed by the truth of all members of the set.
