PHYSCI 5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Antibody, Very Low-Density Lipoprotein, Extracellular Fluid
● Proteins are good
● 9 are called essential that body cannot make and the rest of 11 is nonessential
High protein diet
Functions of proteins:
● Act as enzymes / chemical facilitators
○ Taking certain chemicals that we call reactions and converting them to products
○ Enzymes speed up chemical reactions
■ example eating lipids// you’ll need lipase function to speed up chemical
reactions to speed reactions to break down lipids
■ //lactase- enzyme that breaks down sugar lactose
● Lactose intolerant
● Make hormones or messengers
○ Insulin
■ Made of peptides (small proteins)
■ In the pancreas
○ Testosterone
○ Estrogen
● Maintain fluid balance
○ Maintaining balance of water inside and outside of cells
○ Location of water in the body
■ Inside the cells
■ In our blood vessels
■ In a space in between blood vessels - interstitial fluid
○ There has to be the right amt of water in cells, blood, and interstitial
○ In a healthy situation, we always do
○ Proper amount of proteins allow for proper water
○ What happens if water becomes imbalanced?
■ Swelling
■ Starvation: breakdown of proteins in blood, interstitial fluid, cells
● Get edema - swelling in body due to imbalance
○ Injury // Weight lifting // Water becomes imbalanced
● Immune system
○ Got a minor sharp object penetrating your skin
○ Your immune system doesn’t belong to your body so immune cells recruited for
this, called antibodies
■ Agrific cardiovascular systems
● Transport
○ Transportation of
■ VLDL, LDL - lipoproteins - vesicles made of lipids and proteins
● Movement
● Actin and myosin
○ Muscles produce force - force means contractions
○ When you exercise, muscles build more proteins in them
■ Adaptation to put more proteins and more force you can produce

9 are called essential that body cannot make and the rest of 11 is nonessential. Taking certain chemicals that we call reactions and converting them to products. Example eating lipids// you"ll need lipase function to speed up chemical reactions to speed reactions to break down lipids. //lactase- enzyme that breaks down sugar lactose. Maintaining balance of water inside and outside of cells. In a space in between blood vessels - interstitial fluid. There has to be the right amt of water in cells, blood, and interstitial. In a healthy situation, we always do. Proper amount of proteins allow for proper water. Starvation: breakdown of proteins in blood, interstitial fluid, cells. Get edema - swelling in body due to imbalance. Injury // weight lifting // water becomes imbalanced. Got a minor sharp object penetrating your skin. Your immune system doesn"t belong to your body so immune cells recruited for this, called antibodies.
