1880"s/90s shift away from mill"s thoughts about govt interfering not being good. End of 19th century, cities growing, urban poverty; liberalism 18th century jefferson/mill questioned. Left wing and right wing liberalism split. Left wing liberalism leads to new deal and great society model. Govt interference can help with healthcare example. Up until the 1980s, even conservatives accepted the welfare state as a good thing. People began to shift away from that to today"s era. Relatively few supporters of a welfare state; even liberals more focused about issues concerning race, ethnicity, identity etc. Mill impeccable job summing up why it"s a mistake to undermine capitalism. Utopianism - socialism in the 19th century epitome of utopianism. Socialism not realistic bc it is not serious about human nature. Main arguments on notes on socialism : Walmart or any sweat shop, even though job is dull and miserable; wealthy within their community; wealth brings some amount of freedom.
