Sunni = largest sect of islam, no hierarchy. Shia = sect of islam, jewish population, hierarchy. Negative > imperial exploitation w/o residence of west. No rule of law: tribal control, central gov. was very weak. Under-development: not as technologically savvy as the west. Qajar: weak central govt. dominated by different tribes throughout the land. Britain and russia would not go to war for other half of country. Keeps agrarian states in low position to overpower and exploit. Rentier economy: from one national resource, rents out their national resources to other countries to keep their economy going. Iran did not rent out to advance > example of ^^ If one country gained concession the other country could not have that power. Domestic rivals > foreign power has power instead of local chiefs. Personal enrichment: crown to pay for their lifestyle: royalists, bazaaris, clergy, intelligentsia, peasantry. Clergy: bringing in european thoughts and liberalism into community.
