Document Summary

Majority of studies for rats are ex-vivo (ex. The more psa-ncam, the more changes that are taking place in the brain--in terms of synapses. + correlation with amount of psa-ncam expressed in frontal cortex and high motivation. Psa-ncam a marker of both synaptogenesis and migrating neurons. Forced swim test: induces stress, stress response, depression-like symptoms. Increase of anxiety-like symptoms in the future. Adult group comparison to show absence of effects--proves effects are a developmental thing. Fluoxetine exposure during adolescence increases preference for cocaine in adulthood--in mice. Rats were not on drugs when tested. Long-term effects: more reward sensitivity (fluoxitine alone does this as well) Limits on external validity, difficult to model in the rodent. Repeated administration of thc in adolescent monkeys (no adult group either--this control is important) Considerably closer to the human condition than rodents. Injected with thc, not self-administered--one limitation (humans will self-administer) Route is also different: humans typically smoke thc, not inject it.
