William james - baby comes into the world as a blank slate, encountering new stimuli with it senses all at once. However, babies have already been using all of their senses in the womb with the exception of vision which is not really practiced in the dark uterine environment. In order to study infants, need to study capacities that babies already have. Reflexes, basic use of senses (e. g. looking behaviors) Adult blindfolded so they don"t experience the stimuli and unconsciously influence the child"s behavior. Clever hans - horse that could do math; however when another person other than the owner asked a question, it couldn"t answer correctly; answered based on subtle cues from the owner. Computer controls stimuli shown on a video monitor and records from the video camera. Preferential looking study: what the baby looks at most, timing how long the baby looks at each thing.
