Health behaviors: any behaviors that can benefit or harm your health. Capability individual ability to perform a behavior. Motivation reflective motivation (slow, controlled, conscious, self reflection) and automatic motivation (implicit/unconscious) Inhalation - takes about 8-15 secs for nicotine to reach the brain. Faster than any other forms of nicotine intake such as patches and gums. Mesolimbic dopamine system determines what is stimulating and rewarding. Nicotine inhalation changes the structure and function of this region which leads to dependence over time. Positive reinforcement properties of nicotine: smoking makes you feel good. Negative reinforcement properties of nicotine: smoking reduces cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and stress. Negative reinforcement value has larger influence than positive reinforcement value in nicotine dependence. Important to know because it can be used for treatment/to help reduce nicotine dependence and smoking behaviors. e. g. positive reinforcement reduce the good feelings or increase other events in daily life that elicit good positive feelings.
