Santiago ramon y cajal- demonstrated a narrow gap separating one neuron from another. Injected a dye in the neuron to be able to see it. In 1920, otto loewi demonstrated that synapses were chemical in nature. Neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, gaba, glutamate. Fills the lock so the neurotransmitter cant get in.
