Document Summary
Psych10: intro to psychology- lecture 3: neural and hormonal systems. The study of bumps on the skull and their relationship to mental abilities and characteristic traits. Yielded one big idea- that the brain might have different areas that do different things (location of function) Biological psychology includes neuroscience, behavior genetics, neuropsychology, etc. Explore different aspects of how the nature of the mind and behavior is rooted in biological nature. Study of the biology of the mind deals with neurons. Junction between the axon tip of a neuron and the dendrite of the body of the neuron receiving the message: not connected- synapse gap. Santiago ramon y cajal- demonstrated a narrow gap separating one neuron from another. Injected a dye in the neuron to be able to see it. In 1920, otto loewi demonstrated that synapses were chemical in nature. Neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, gaba, glutamate. Fills the lock so the neurotransmitter cant get in.
