Document Summary

Single feature enough to find target, not shared with distractors. Combination of features needed to find target. Feature integration theory: suggests that we have distinct feature maps. Each map has info about the location of its feature. In an isolated feature search, you only have to consult your feature map. In a combined feature search, e must bind information from 2 or more maps. Search times can be influenced by set size. For a disjunctive search, size doesn"t influence search time. For a conjunctive search, search time is longer for greater number of stimuli. As the similarity between target and distractor increases, so does the difficulty in detecting the target stimuli. It is not just about the number of features per se but just about the confusability of items. During the preattentive stage, features pop out effortlessly. During the focused attention stage, features are combined together to create object representations.
