Antipsychotics were developed --> allowed stabilization of patients with psychosis --> could live outside of institutions. Allowed shift from deinstitutionalization and community based care. Possession of drugs --> attempts to self medicate. No prescription medication available --> turn to street drugs. Crimes of survival - to meet basic needs. Violence and mental illness are not highly correlated. Those with mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence. Those in jail are pre-trial, presumed innocent. If they can pay bail, they can leave and wait outside of jail for trial. May be released if charges are dropped. Prison - after people have been sentenced for their crime. Transition programs to prepare prisoners to re-enter society and prevent them from coming back. Some lose job and housing b/c they were in jail/prison --> committing crimes of survival, lose access to prescription medication. Attempting to break the cycle of incarceration. Mental health screening for every inmate that comes in.
