PSYCH 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Primary Stages, Object Permanence, Egocentrism
Document Summary
Children"s active role in constructing their own thinking through interaction with the environment. Important for children to explore on their own because they learn things that would we never have taught them. Saw children as motivated to explore own environment which leads to cognitive change (learning) Believed in 4 primary stages of cognitive development. Approximate ages given for each stage but varies between individuals. Invariant and universal - always in the same order and can"t skip one. However, people did not always advance to the final stage. Sensorimotor stage (0-2): sensory motor as basis of knowledge. Exploring environment using senses in increasingly advanced ways with the development of more motor skills. Skills and knowledge advance with advancing motor skills. E. g. grabbing and sucking reflexes in babies. Object permanence: understanding that objects are stable and permanent even when you can"t see them. Do babies have expectations that objects don"t go away when they can"t be seen.
