PSYCH 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cerebrum, Corpus Callosum, Libido
Document Summary
Pons: help coordinate automatic and unconscious movements (swallowing, posture, suppress body movement in sleep) Cerebellum ( little brain ): help coordinate voluntary movement and fine motor movement, balance. Inferior (auditory system) and superior (visual reflexes) colliculi (singular colliculus) Periaqueductal gray ( cell bodies around cerebral aqueduct ) When these cells die, people end up with parkinson"s disease. Nerve network in brainstem--has axons throughout entire brain. If the brain is injured, the brain will swell downwards (skull prevents it from swelling out) Brainstem will compress, causing the cells to stop working, leading to comas. All senses (except smell) pass through the thalamus on the way to the cortex. Sends messages from cortex to medulla or cerebellum. Directs endocrine system via messages to the pituitary gland. Regulates body temperature, ensures adequate food/water intake (homeostasis), involved in sex drive. Four f"s: fighting (aggression), fleeing (fear), feeding, fucking. Mammillary bodies: memory (consolidation from short term to long term)
