Social institution- total institutions eg. mental hospitals, army, prisons. Institution- space in which society takes place, where people interact. Society reproduces itself through institutions- people are socialized to institutions. Institution takes place in different parts, it is an institution because it has a logic of its own and has no problem reproducing itself. Family, school, friends, church- these institutions teach us values, morals. Values and morals- learn what we need to know to survive. Total institutions- absorbing, self-neglecting institutions, take away the individuality, removes the person, trained to follow instructions, put you in a uniform, resocializing institutions, nevertheless they have a purpose in our society. Total institutions are subsets of institutions- remove individuals from individuality. Individuals deviate from society & create their own counterculture- react against society. Face work (goffman)- self presentation in the everyday life. Dramaturgical theory- like performances in a play, theatre- we perform, we have a face for every social space in which we interact.
