Document Summary

Sociologists have a broad view of economy. It"s human nature to have challenging work, engaging. But we are raised with the ideology that work is just a job. The author rejects this ideology that if we didn"t have to work, we wouldn"t. Service sector job: most of the jobs in our economy are low level low skill low wage service sector job (ex: hotel cleaners, busboys) We would call them lousy jobs, no wonder they don"t care about their jobs, we don"t seem to care about those jobs. Job: a temporary position to pay their bills. Career: work up the ladder to a better position to make more money. Demands and pressures of a career path -> get burnt out -> stuck & hit a wall-> there"s only so much space at the top. This happens around 40 years -> become petty, cynical, self-loathing. Productivity will decline in an organization if you have a lot of these people.
