Sociology focuses on differences between people (in terms of what they have) and why some people have more than others (as a matter of social class, race / ethnicity, gender / etc. ) What is class? the effect of individual effort has different payoff for different people. Stratification - social classes are stratified (some low, some high) within society. Max weber - distinguished between social class, status, and party. Social class: the economic dimension of inequality (why some people have more and better material things) Structure = how the pieces of something fit together for social structure = how the institutions and organizations within society fit together (one of the main mechanisms determining what social class people end up in) We all realize that more education you get more likely you are to be on the upper side of the class structure (clear relationship between education and social class)
