Document Summary
The division of labor in society (1893) durkheim. How division of labor is connected to solidarity. Social solidarity: the sense of belonging amongst members of a group or society. The glue (feeling) that holds society together. Society is made up of people who feel connected together. Durkheim wants to know what holds us together. Durkheim uses written laws to study solidarity. Idea that laws reflect values and norms that people have. Laws against murder show that people in society value individual life. Adultery: not a crime; shows people don"t value this as much as life. Laws are precise, written down, have entities to enforce them. Mechanical solidarity: solidarity based on similarities between individuals. Sense of belongingness / connectedness you feel when you have things (usually beliefs) in common with others. Mechanical : metaphor for things that aren"t living; all of its parts are identical. Diamond: each carbon atom of that diamond is identical to all molecules in it.
