It is not consciousness that determines being, but social being that determines consciousness. Determines : (aside: caiusality, usually, kautian)-a >b (one before than the other) Marx is probably using dialectical causality: a way to explain how something happens | thesis and antithesis, constituted together in the same moments (arrows go both ways | opposites), which leads down to synthesis.
