Neo-expressionism: jean-michel basquiat, a self-taught painter from brooklyn, led a short but successful career as a neo-expressionist in the 1980s. In this decade, he was unique and ahead of his time, because most other artists were white and learned skill from an institution. Jean-michel basquiat was seen as unskilled and inexperienced. However, basquiat had an innate ability for drawing and exercised it from a very young age. He may have entered the art scene without former training, but he gained recognition through having a friendship with. Interestingly, increased misconceptions, self-identity issues, and issues with racism made him fall heavily into depression, which led to his early death.
