(cid:863) -galileo. What is constructivism: an educational philosophy of how students learn and (therefore) how we should teach, based on the work of piaget & vygotsky, among others. Vygotsky: zone of proximal development, cognitive apprenticeship, meditate learning (scaffolding) Both: that learning has (at least some) social elements, the use of mixed-ability learning groups, the main ideas. Teachers cannot simply give students knowledge, that leads to rote memorization and superficial, meaningless learning . To truly learn, students must construct knowledge in their own minds by being active learners, engaging the material, working together, and constantly checking their understandings against new info: other important elements. Let students discuss and solve problems together, like in the real world! Let students experiment and discover on their own.
