What Are Values?
Values
o Are principles that guide behavior
o Are an ongoing, never-ending process that forms our personalities
o Are slightly different among the generations
Values Must Be…
Chosen freely, internalized, and allowed to guide a person’s life.
Chosen from alternative situations, things, people, etc.
Chosen after considering the consequences.
Performed or carried out.
A pattern or foundation of life.
Makes a person feel positive, satisfied, fulfilled, and joyous.
Publicly affirmed.
Types of Values
There are four types of values
o Absolute and resolute
o Intrinsic and extrinsic
o Traditional, personal and professional
o Instrumental and terminal
Absolute and Resolute
Absolute
o Values refer to your beliefs.
Resolute
o Means it might sometimes be acceptable to detour from your values.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic
An intrinsic
o Personal satisfaction.
An extrinsic
