• Having something to work towards gives a sense of wellbeing.
• Gives control over one’s life.
What Influences Management?
• Historical influence
• Basic physiological needs
• Culture
• Personality
• Technology
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
• In 2004, a devastating tsunami hit Southeast Asia. Over 200,000 people were
killed. Watch the movie trailer clip “The Impossible” which chronicles a true story of
survival after a catastrophic event. Image you and your family in a similar situation; lost
after a tragic disaster - all your possessions, food, water, and clothing
destroyed. Separated from your loved ones, frightened for your safety and unsure where
you would find food or medical treatment, what would you do? What feelings would you
go through? Could you concentrate on issues such as obtaining a good college education
or advancing in a dream career? Would your relationships be tested?
• According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory, people in a “survival” mode are
unable to attain a strong sense of self-esteem or attempt to become self-fulfilled. Basic
needs must be met (at least partially) before individuals have the opportunity to become
self-actualized and pursue/attain their dreams.
Technology & Management…
• Technology plays a significant role in management.
o In 2015, it was reported that 64% of Americans own a Smartphone.
• Technology is neither good nor bad. It can have a great effect on how we manage our
lives.
o How do you rely on technology when it comes to management?
Personality & Management
• Generally, your personality is considered to be the totality of character attributes and
behavioral traits that you possess. Your personality will differentiate you from another
person, such as your spouse, personal friend, neighbor, associate at work, and others. The
type of personality you develop through the stages of life can adversely or positively
affect your current life situation or future plans.
• Knowing your strengths and weaknesses can help you manage life’s challenges and
successes.
Life Management
• Includes events, situations, and decisions that make up a lifestyle.
o Life management encompasses all the decisions a person or family will make and
the way values, goals, and resources effect decision making.
