Document Summary

Shropshire and southdown and dorsets are the sheep at uconn. Dual purpose sheeps, used for meat and wool. Other types of sheep include hampshire, rambouillet, and east friesian. We rely on more synthetic fibers such as cotton. Not a lot of money in the wool industry anymore. Breed to lamb at 1 year or 2 years of age. Finish weight: 120 pounds, dependent on backfat thickness. Boxes where lambs are put with their mom right after they are born so that the ewe can bond with the lamb. Milk that has high amount of antibodies in it. Functioning rumen around 45 to 60 days. Optimum production (lowest input/cost with highest rate of growth you can get) Fine, medium long wool (higher quality, softer wool) Fertility, wool growth, milk production, long lived. Good herding instinct - large flocks with herding dogs. Older ewes are better mothers and tend to have bigger litters than those who have only had one litter.
