Document Summary
Week 1 ansc 1001 lab 1 notes avery welch. Form & function of external features of farm animals. Goats, pigs, and sheep have smaller heads and bodies than cows and horses. Chickens are birds and are marginally different from any of the other animals viewed in lab (wings, beaks, etc. ) Sheep have 2 teats; cows have 4-6 (2 need to be removed if there are 6; there should be 1 teat per quarter), goats have 2 teats, and horses also have 2 teats. Horses are monogastric, hind fermenters and have a cecum that allows them to eat grass & have enzymes to help break down cellulose. Sheep tails have to be docked to avoid bacterial infection when they defecate: sheep manure is pelleted, dry, and compact. Sheep and goats are more agile than horses or cows, and it shows in their confident gait.
