ANSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Suppository, Udder, Outcrossing
Document Summary
Selection of animals for production, show, pleasure: purebreeding. A member of a breed, the animals of which possess a common ancestry and distinctive characteristics, eligible for registry & breed association: inbreeding. Mating of animals more closely related than the average of the population from which they came: closebreeding. Mating of animals more distantly related than in closebreeding, but keeping offspring related to a highly regarded ancestor. Usually practiced to conserve and perpetuate certain valuable traits: outcrossing. Mating of animals of the same breed but no relation within about 6 generations back. Most purebred livestock are produced this way: grading up. Purebred sires of a breed are mated to native or grade females. Many purebred are this way and thus not eligible for registry: crossbreeding. Selection of breeding stock: progeny testing, performance testing, growth efficiency traits. High growth rate is important for meat and milk producers, where low rate is important for egg producing chickens.
