ANSC 1111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Pyruvate Dehydrogenase, Thiamine, Monogastric
Document Summary
Water soluble vitamins and energy metabolism and nutritional endocrinology. Must be included in monogastric diet, daily. Not stored, which is why they need to be consumed frequently. Beri-beri (disease that led to the discovery of thiamine; nerve problems occur in the extremities, leads to heart issues and inability to contract muscles correctly) 48 hour old piglets fed milk diet with or without riboflavin. Blood rushed to face; get very red and hot. Primates and guinea pigs are only animals that require vitamin c (we must ingest it in out diet since we cannot make it) Associated with eating stored foods for long periods of time. Primates, guinea pigs, fruit bats cannot synthesize. Fresh tea leaves, berries, guava, rose hips. Calorie = heat required to increase one gram of water. We lose a certain amount of that energy from fecal energy. Biggest loss in energy is from fecal loss. What is able to be absorbed is digestible energy.
