Heme group- when bound with oxygen=scarlet; oxygen released=violet. Elevated when horse has parasites or allergic reaction. A lot slower in veins that in arteries. Extra pump to make blood move in the body. More than 1 liters of blood loss- horse may need blood transfusion. Donor horses 8 l blood/collection, every 4 weeks. For testing, must get blood to lab in 48 hrs. 4-72 hours needed for blood testing for diseases. Clinical signs: severe fever, weight loss, weakness, edema, death. Spread by blood sucking insects (horse flies, stable flies, and deer flies) ; or repeatedly using needles. Cause: heart malformation, direct insult to the heart or its electrical system, or secondarily to disease in other organs. Sudden disruption to blood flow / heart. Shorter period of exercise before development of fatigue.
