Consists of a 6-8 inch long muscular, mucous membrane-lined tube that connects the vestibule of the vulva to the cervix. The pelvic reproductive organs should be held so that the vagina tilts slightly downward. Highly distensible sphincter muscle - physical barrier between vagina and uterus. Uterus is suspended within the body cavity by two tough, sheet-like structures called broad ligaments. Function= to protect, nourish, and provide an environment conducive to the development of the embryo and fetus, and to expel the fetus during parturition. Outermost layer - continuous with the broad ligaments. Consists of 2 sheets of muscular tissue- one oriented longitudinally, the other circulatory. Responsible for the powerful contractions that expel the foal at birth (parturition) Complex mucosal membrane containing rich blood supply and many glands.
